Country shindig ... The cast of Dimboola gets into character for their upcoming

THE dinky-di wedding of the year is coming to Wyndham and all are invited.

The Werribee Theatre Company is celebrating 40 years of amateur theatre and will stage the classic play Dimboola to mark the occasion.

This play is in the form of a reception set in a country hall where the entire audience form the guests at the wedding.

Jack Hibberd wrote the play in the late 1960s.

More Australians have seen Dimboola than any other musical, comedy or play.

The play is the country celebration of the wedding of Protestant Morrie McAdam to Catholic Reen Delaney.

Director Wendy Brookes said the play was the wedding reception from hell.

“It is about the coming together of two families and all these issues arise,” she said. “There is the priest who is drunk, the party crashers; the fathers of the bride and groom fighting and the best man trying to crack onto the bridesmaids.”

The cast of 16 has been rehearsing for six weeks.

Cathy Corcoran plays the delusional bride.

“The bride has no taste whatsoever, but she believes she is beautiful,” she said. “It’s full of lots of laughs and is well received around country towns.”

“The play had a cult following in Australia for a while and everyone really gets into the spirit.”

Dimboola will be staged in the Werribee Football Clubrooms on 10, 11, 16, 17 18 October. For more information contact Elizabeth Ross on 9741 4212.
