THE City of Whittlesea is encouraging the many local groups that work to protect human rights to apply for grants being offered by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

The commission is offering grants of up to $5000 to not-for-profit organisations that engage in projects aimed at protecting and promoting understanding of human rights.

“Human rights are an essential element of any democratic and inclusive society,” said the commission’s chief executive, Helen Szoke.

“We hope that community organisations that receive these grants can pass on knowledge and awareness of human rights to their communities.”

Whittlesea mayor Kris Pavlidis encouraged local groups to make a submission for a grant.

“In the City of Whittlesea we enjoy a strong sense of community respect for the rights of our fellow citizens and this is a welcome initiative to assist organisations to further promote the principles of the Charter (of Human Rights and Responsibilities),” Cr Pavlidis said.

“The City of Whittlesea boasts the third largest culturally and linguistically diverse community in Victoria and actively encourages inter-cultural cohesion and celebration through the numerous events and programs that are offered in the municipality.”

Only registered, non-profit organisations are eligible to apply for a grant and must do so by 17 August.

Application forms and details are available on-line at www.humanrightscommission.vic.gov.au.

Inquiries about the grants can be directed to George Bisas, 9281 7128.
