PIT Gymnastics continues to shine on the state competition scene.
Pit, based in Mill Park but home to gymnasts from across the northern suburbs and one of the strongest clubs in the state, has enjoyed a stellar year so far in a number of high quality competitions.
The club sent five representatives to represent Victoria at the Australian Championships in Sydney earlier this year, a similar number to that which contested last year’s event.
Against stiff opposition, Kevin James captured first place in the individual rings event and Andrew Miles conjured a third place finish.
Pit Gymnastics was also well represented at the national championships in July, sending 20 students from levels two to eight to Canberra.
The competition was of the highest standard, including gymnasts from New Zealand, but the gym managed some outstanding results.
The gym’s level eight team won the most success, finishing fifth overall and winning a bronze for the rings apparatus.
Club director John Dorrington says the competitive stream of the gym continues to unearth talented gymnasts.
“We just keep trying to improve the program,” he said.
“We’ve had a pretty strong boys program for a while, and once they start to get higher and higher, it’s like a pyramid effect.
“The ones that can hang in there and maintain the standard rise to the top.”
Pit accommodates up to 500 gymnasts in its programs, ranging from the flipper groups for young children to the more experienced and competitive level eight students.
Gymnasts at level six are eligible to represent Victoria at national level, although many of the club’s members are involved in recreational programs.
Another team of Pit gymnasts will compete in the Victorian Championships at the State Netball and Hockey Centre this Thursday and Friday.
The club will enter about 30 gymnasts from a variety of levels and will be competing against some of the best young gymnasts in the state.
