TWO people were arrested in Campbellfield last week as police shut down an alleged hoon gathering.

Police locked down the gathering on Foden Street last Wednesday night in an operation that saw 75 vehicles intercepted and over 200 people spoken to by police.

Four vehicles were impounded, 52 people were issued with unroadworthy notices, four people received a penalty notice for driving an unregistered vehicle and 72 other traffic offences were detected.

Twenty-nine EPA notices were issued and two men were arrested for conduct endangering persons and drive in a manner dangerous.

The Sheriff’s Office also spoke to 41 people and 409 warrants were executed, recovering $119,736 in outstanding fines.

The bust was part of Operation Friction2, a large-scale police operation that monitors hoon gatherings in Melbourne’s north, west and southern suburbs.

Some gatherings have been known to attract around 200 cars on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Police are alleging group leaders arrange for other hoons to meet at several locations each night where drivers take part in dangerous driving behaviours, including burnouts and fishtails.

After monitoring the gatherings police have been alarmed at the risky and dangerous driving and behaviours.

North West Road Policing Acting Superintendent Stephen Mutton said that it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt.

“We have been monitoring these gatherings and we are astounded at the reckless behaviour of these hoons,” Acting Supt Mutton said.

“We have witnessed drivers showing off and undertaking high speed burnouts within metres of onlookers. While these drivers undertake in risky behaviour at the meeting sites, we also know that they have been driving in a dangerous manner between gatherings, speeding and intimidating other drivers.

Acting Supt Mutton said police will continue to crack down on hoon behaviour and drivers who have a blatant disregard for other people’s safety.
