VOLUNTEER graffiti removal trailers have saved ratepayers over a million dollars in the City of Hume in the past two years.
Since the volunteer graffiti removal trailer program was introduced in 2008, a total of 40,477m2 of graffiti has been removed by volunteer teams.
The amount of graffiti would cost $1,011,925 to be removed commercially.
The trailers are staffed by volunteers five days a week and deter graffitist artists from re-offending by cleaning and painting over graffiti quickly.
Hume mayor Geoff Porter said two specially fitted graffiti trailers staffed by volunteers have been crucial in removing graffiti from fences, buildings and other structures.
“Graffiti is a problem throughout Victoria and in Hume we are tackling this problem head-on,” Cr Porter said.
“We take pride in the appearance of our city and are determined to reduce graffiti.”
Cr Porter also praised the hard work of volunteers involved in the program.
The program is funded through a State Government graffiti prevention grant.
Residents can report litter or graffiti by calling 1300 HUME CLEAN (1300 486 325).
