FAMILIES rebuilding after the 2009 bushfires will have access to three-bedroom homes for less than $150,000.
The cut-price houses will be built by the winners of a design competition run by the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (VBRRA).
The houses were designed specifically for bushfire-affected people at a set price of $150,000 plus site costs.
Wheeler Design and Construction and Link Building Group were announced the winners of the competition last week and will now build demonstration homes in Marysville and Kinglake.
The three-bedroom homes are also six-star energy rated and complied with Bushfire Attack level 40.
VBRRA manager of Building Advisory Services and Temporary Housing Max Ginn, said the winning homes offered flexibility for people rebuilding in bushfire affected areas.
“It is wonderful for people to be able to see they can build safe, energy-efficient houses at an affordable price,” Mr Ginn said.
“The designs are also flexible and allow for a variety of different site shapes and orientations.”
The base construction price of $150,000 for each project has been fixed until May 2011 and is open to those who lost a property during the February 2009 bushfires and wish to rebuild. The cost excludes consultancy fees and external works.
The demonstration homes are expected to be completed by November 2010, when they will be open for people to inspect.
