On a roll … Hidden Valley’s Glen Van Dyk took out his fourth Hidden Valley club championship last week. 43975

HIDDEN Valley’s Glen Van Dyk has won four club championships at Hidden Valley Golf Club in the last five years - the most recent of which was last week - but the humble champ said there was more to life than winning.

“Hidden Valley is a great place to play with all my mates,” he said.

“I’m a bit older now, so that’s what you look forward to rather than the serious side to the competition, it’s always nice to play and win.

But just getting out with a good bunch of blokes and having a few beers afterwards is what I look forward to more than winning.”

The 41-year-old said he did look forward to playing the club championship every year.

“From a club perspective, for sure I look forward it,” he said.

“From a team perspective, we play pennant against the other clubs in the district.

“Hidden Valley’s in division one, section one, so the highest grade basically in the Dalhousie district, which includes Kilmore, Broadford and all those guys.”

Van Dyk said he was not up against the best possible field in the club championships, which he won by a massive 28 shots.

“It’s over four rounds of stroke play, you play against everyone in the club. In the whole championship there’s about 60 but only seven or eight in A grade and a few of the good players weren’t able to play this year,” he said.

Van Dyk has been on and off the golf course since he picked up the sport at the age of 13.

“Basically I started as a kid and did a traineeship for a professional,” he said.

“Then I gave it up for 10 years after I had a child, then started taking it up again when I moved to Hidden Valley about four years ago.”

His comeback to the sport has seen him dominate the club championship, winning four out of the last five.

Van Dyk said Hidden Valley was one of the best courses in the area but overall his favourite was a premier Melbourne course.

“Metropolitan is my favourite. Brilliant design and aesthetically it’s a pleasing course to the eye because of the trees,” he said.

“Everyone’s opinion is different, depending on what you like. I’m not much of a fan of links golf, which are your ocean courses.”

Van Dyk said he was the only regular player in his family but his daughter liked the occasional swing.

“My daughter plays a little bit of Wombats (junior program) at Hidden Valley,” he said.

“She’s 12 but she comes out and has a hit with the boys on Saturday.”
