HUME City prevailed in its Victorian Premier League (VPL) round two clash against Dandenong Thunder (3-0) on Saturday night.

It was feared the match at SS Anderson Reserve, Port Melbourne would not go ahead after a freak storm hit Melbourne during the afternoon.

But the rain stopped in time for kick-off.

Hume coach Andy Vlahos said the rain caused a few issues with the pitch and the game almost wasn’t going to go ahead.

Goals from Steven Pace, striker Zoran Petrevski and in-form Tansel Baser sent the Thunder packing, as City cruised to three points.

Vlahos said Petrevski and Baser were hard to stop when it came to set pieces.

“Yeah, first one was a set piece and Tansel Baser and Zoran Petrevski are our danger men in the area, if either one can get onto it, its half a goal,” he said.

“We started the game well in the first half. We dominated the midfield, which was the key to our goals and the key to our victory.”

City led 2-0 at the major break before icing the game with a third, giving Hume its second win in as many matches against 2009 VPL finalists.

Vlahos paid credit to his two main defenders, silencing the Thunder’s danger men.

“They played their normal four-four-two, but we forced them to play not their game, we kept Veton (Korcari) and (Joey) Di Iorio pretty quiet, they were tightly marked by Steven Pace and Izzy Erdogan.”

Vlahos also heaped praise on stand-in keeper “Mario”, but he was so fresh to the starting line-up that the coach could not recall his surname.

“We had Louie (Acevski) out through an ear infection, so Mario stepped in,” he said.

“He did a great job and that’s what we expect from our back up keeper.”

Vlahos is expecting a tough battle at Heidelberg this Monday night against Sunshine, as City tries to go three wins from three.

“I did look at them last week (Sunshine) and it’s going to be a bit more of a physical battle after seeing them play,” he said.

“We just have to play our game and try to break them down in the areas where they’re weaker.”

City take on United at the Olympic Village on 14 March from 7pm.
