WILLIAMSTOWN’S fifth round clash with Frankston ended on a positive note but only just with the Seagulls stealing a one goal victory on Sunday, the final score 21.13.139 to 20.13.133.
The round five match saw the visitors to Frankston Park jump out of the gates early, kicking 7.4 to 2.5.
The Dolphins reeled the lead in though with an incredible 10-goal second quarter.
“We started well early – in the second quarter we got to 10 goals to three,” Williamstown coach Brad Gotch said.
“They lifted their competitiveness, intensity, tackling and just overall.
“You could see the game turning a little bit and then they just went bang, bang, bang and kicked seven or eight goals in the last 20 minutes of the second quarter.”
There was not much in it in the third with both teams finding the goal four times each.
An entertaining final term saw the Seagulls scrape in by the skin of their teeth with the Dolphins never far behind.
“In the end I was pretty happy with the boys to resurrect it,” Gotch said.
“They came back at us but we hung in there. It was goal for goal in the second half. “With one minute to play there was a goal the difference and we held it up, caused a stoppage, and then the siren went.”
Gotch made Pat Rose the “focal point” for the forward line with the small forward responding with seven majors in a best on ground performance.
“It was a great effort by him. The other forwards couldn’t shake (Shaun) Pollard and (Trent) Shinners.
“One on one or on the lead, he took a couple of contested one handed marks too. He kicked straight as well with 7.1.”
Bulldog Callan Ward stuck his hand up for selection again with two goals and another quality performance – his second since he was dropped back to the VFL affiliate, while fellow Bulldogs Wayde Skipper and Guy O’Keefe also performed strongly.
