WHITTLESEA’S Big V basketball Division One men’s side faced its toughest test of the season so far, coming up against the undefeated Sunbury Jets on Saturday night and it was the Jets who came out on top.
Sunbury won the game 106-82 largely thanks to excellent shot selection, with the side shooting at 51 per cent for the game despite hitting just one of eight from beyond the three-point line.
The Jets jumped out to an early lead taking a six-point lead into the first break, and extended the margin at every change.
Whittlesea trailed by 11 points at halftime and 12 at the final break before Sunbury blew the game out in the final term.
The Pacers relied heavily on their first unit, with regular contributors Jason Dirkx, Adem Hasan, Sokol Blazovski and Troy Brown all recording close to 40 minutes of court time.
Hasan and Dirkx again shared the bulk of the scoring duties for the Pacers, with Hasan registering 23 points and Dirkx 18.
At the other end, Sunbury’s Nathan Sellwood was unstoppable with 29 points, while Michael Thomas (19 points), Rohan Bishop (17) and Cameron Hume (15) all made healthy contributions.
The Pacers took on Bulleen on Sunday afternoon, but scores were unavailable at the time of writing.
The women’s Division Two side had a weekend off after the scheduled game against Warrnambool was called off.
The Warrnambool team was two-and-a-half hours out of Melbourne when their bus broke down, leaving the group stranded on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams are interested in playing the fixture at a later date, but it remains to be seen whether they can fit another match into an already jam-packed calendar.
In other results, Whittlesea’s Youth League Two men’s side went down to Sunbury 105-73, while the Youth League women’s team was playing on Sunday afternoon, after deadline.
