SUNSHINE Heights has had a rough induction into the Western Region Football League Division One ranks.

They sit in ninth position after their 130-point loss to Spotswood on the weekend.

In round two they took a positive step forward with a first Division One win in against West Footscray – a win which had them on even points with three other teams at the bottom of the ladder.

For coach Mick Grima, who stepped up from the assistant’s position to take the reins in 2009 – it was a monkey off the back.

“For me as coach, personally, it was just a relief,” he said.

“There was a lot of expectation going into that game from outside the club.

“Twenty-eight points down at halftime, a few things start going through your head but to turn it around was such a relief.”

The Dragons got up against the Roosters by 137 to 72 but have been felled by Albion, Altona and most recently Spotswood.

Grima said there were positive signs though.

“We think we have got a couple more wins in us.

“We think what is really positive is that we haven’t been really blown out of the water by anyone.”

Grima also gave a bit back to the detractors who were writing off his side before the first ball had been bounced in 2009.

“People were looking at it (the West Footscray match) as our only chance to win a game, we don’t think that is the case.

“A lot of people said we couldn’t do it but as I said it was only in 1998 that we were in third division back when the WRFL had a third division and had someone said back then that we would win a game in Division One, they would have laughed at you.”
