WESTERN Jets faced the full fury of the brand new Gold Coast team in their round two TAC Cup clash on Sunday, receiving a three-figure thumping at Burbank Oval.
The Gold Coast team, in only its second ever game, smashed the Jets 26.13.169 to 5.5.35.
The Coasters got out to an early break in the opening term and piled on 7.3 for the quarter, against the Jets’ three goals.
The Jets stayed in touch in the second quarter and were down by 29 points at the main break.
But after half-time the match became a slaughter, as the Coasters piled on 18 goals to one in the final hour in an ominous display.
Luke Shreeve kicked five goals, Matthew Fowler and Liam Rutledge had four each and Charlie Dixon and Aaron Fabian three as the Coasters peppered the uprights.
For the Jets, Shannon Ball was the only multiple goal-scorer with two majors.
Scott Sherlock was named as the Jets best, with Jake Carr, Shannon Ball, Joseph Halloran, Justin Morris and Johnny Rayner also performing admirably against the dominant Coast side.
The Jets were without captain Kyle Hartigan and rising star Trent McKenzie for the match, with both on an AIS tour of South Africa.
The performance was in stark contrast to the Jets’ season opener last week, which saw them beat the NSW/ACT Rams by 23 points.
The Jets will look to bounce back this week when they play the Calder Cannons but it may be a tough ask. Calder smashed the Rams on the weekend by 70 points and gave the Knights a 38-point touch up in round one.
