Newport set for battle

CALLING Newport Ladies Lacrosse State League team successful is a bit of an understatement.
The side has made the past 36 grand finals and produced some of the best players in Australia’s history.
Coach Michael Sullivan, a former US Collegiate Division One player from Loyola College, has the luxury of four representatives in the current Australian World Cup team with Sue Sofarnos as the head coach and Marlee Paton, Catherine Morphett and Stacey Morlang as players set to represent Australia in Prague in June.
Morlang, Morphett, Paton are also state representatives along with fellow Newport players Carly Post, Hayley Sofarnos, Lyndsey Paton and Kate Simpson – seven in total.
But the list of names rolls on with former Australian great Margaret Barlow and English World Cup star Diane Stearn also among the ranks.
“We have an exciting mix of young players and women who have been with the club for years,” Sullivan said.
“We’re excited for this year’s competition and thrilled that so many of our players are representing their country and state over the next weeks and months.”
The side is the current Australian Club Champion after competing in the Nationals in Adelaide last year. The team will defend its title in June where the best club teams from around the country battle it out.
With the past three premierships under their belt the Newport Ladies will be tough to discount this season.
