AT 65, Geoff Hjorth is proving you're never too old to have a go.

The Whittlesea local is preparing for his fourth Great Victorian Bike Ride, which will see him cycle more than 600 kilometres across the state.

Organised by Bicycle Victoria, the ride starts in Swan Hill and travels along the Murray River to Echuca, and on to Castlemaine across nine days.

“An old mate of mine, who is probably coming up to his 20th or something ride, had urged me to do it,” Geoff said.

“I do (cycle regularly), but I wouldn't call myself a cyclist - I just potter around on the bike. The thing about the Great Vic is that it does give you a bit of a focus, an incentive to get in shape.”

Geoff said exercise was an important part of his lifestyle, and he aimed to cycle three or four times a week.

A “typical ride” for Geoff takes him from Whittlesea to the Arthur's Creek roundabout, along Yan Yean Rd and “down the back” of Doreen.

“Then I usually go through Plenty Rd and back up to Whittlesea,” he said.

“The next extension is to go through Arthur's Creek, and you end up doing about 40 kilometres.

“If I'm feeling serious, I go out to Hurstbridge and back.”

Geoff said he would be aiming to ride everyday to prepare for the Great Victorian Bike Ride, which takes place in November. The Great Victorian Bike Ride takes place from Saturday 26 November to Sunday 4 December and is a fully catered, camping holiday.
