Dandenong pensioner Desmond Kelly has updated a 30-year-old song about road safety and is hoping it will be recorded for everyone to hear.

Let’s Keep Death Off the Road

By Desmond Kelly

Two cracked ribs, a broken spine, abrasions, cuts and gashes

Common words, so often heard, in almost all car smashes

A stretcher here, an ambulance there and the moans of someone dying

If these words have not affected you, thank God, you’re doing fine.

The biggest menace on our roads is a driver after drink

His brain is all befuddled, and he does not stop to think

He feels he’s master of his car, until he hits that pole

Then he ends up in a graveyard, in a six by three foot hole.

When next you step into your car, you’ll do well my friend, to remember

That you’ve got to get through August first, before you reach September

There is no need for excessive speed, of this you must beware

It’s better late than never, so take it easy and ‘get there’.

It’s just not drink but drugs as well, will get you into trouble

Fatigue sets in, get off the road, ‘fore you start seeing double

As for road rage, I’ll set the stage and I do not tell a lie

Let the S.O.B think he has won, you’re much t0o young to die.

I know it’s true, we all must die at one time or another

This is just as certain as everyone must have a mother

But when our time is up, our number will appear on all the boards

So let’s not invite death my friend and let’s keep it off the roads.
