Tanisha, Ruben and their Selby Primary schoolmates dig in to help the environment.
SELBY Primary School's herb, vegie and flower garden will stay bloomin' beautiful thanks to cash for new equipment.
All grade three and four students are Junior Landcare ambassadors in action, known as the Save Water and Trees (SWAT) Squad.
Each Friday afternoon they participate in on-ground and in-classroom environmental activities, including learning about companion planting, weeding the vegetable garden, and investigating seasonal vegies.
A $1000 Coles Junior Landcare equipment grant has given their hands-on studies a boost.
Teacher Rose Stout said students now had 120 new tools, two wheelbarrows and four gardening carts.
“The students are very excited about their new tools and we have already started planting lots of new seeds in our vegie patch,” she said.
The school thanked Coles Ferntree Gully and Belgrave South Home Hardware for the funds with a special assembly last month.
Coles supports the Junior Landcare program with $1000 School Garden Grants using funds raised through reusable bag sales.
The Coles Junior Landcare grant program helps schools establish gardens in their school grounds or community and encourages students to learn about the environment outdoors.
