Week off ruins Bulls’ run
27th June 2007 02:01:05 AM
PERHAPS the disruption caused by the Queen’s Birthday Weekend may be the cause, but in round 8 last weekend the Baw Baw Hockey Club had its only losing performance for the season, with one victory out of six games played.
After that disappointing result the players are keen to regain the victorious form they’ve displayed so consistently for the first seven rounds.

Make-up game from round 6: Southern United d Baw Baw 3-1.
Playing game two in Pennant A, the players knew they were in for a tough game when the fast, well-drilled Southern United attacked repeatedly for the first 10 minutes.
Defenders Sarah Howard, Stu Rayner and Nathan Forester repeatedly pushed back to assist backs Cam Price, Ryan Ward and goalkeeper Drew Bloomfield, who were under constant pressure.
Inners Michael Kramer and Keshia Leggett played close, checking hockey and tackled and hassled the opposition forwards.
They won numerous hard balls and enabled the Bulls to move forward.
Finally after 17 minutes, Baw Baw scored after an interception by Forester saw him pass accurately to Matt Zurrer who ran from half-back to the attacking circle, evading several opponents before passing crisply to winger Shannon Ward, who had made excellent position on the left post behind the united defenders to push in strongly.
Baw Baw started the second half 1-0 up.
Luci Williams and Lauren Grigoleit were prominent early. However, as the young Bulls team tired they started to hit long and lost possession.
United pressed and scored three quick goals from short corners.
Baw Baw then rallied, reverting to short passes and carrying the ball, forcing United to be more defensive and less free-flowing.
Round 8: Camberwell d Baw Baw 2-1.
Thick fog enveloped the State Hockey Centre as the Bulls battled Camberwell.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first 15 minutes before lovely teamwork by Shannon Ward, Lauren Grigoleit and Sarah Howard provided Michael Kramer the chance to take off on a long run and elude several defenders before hitting accurately to score.
Camberwell immediately replied after strenuous efforts to intercept by goalkeeper Cam Price and Drew Bloomfield, having a run on ground.
Wing Jesse Anderson and halfback Stu Rayner combined well to enable the Bulls to move forward, but Camberwell launched several attacks and scored their second to lead 2-1 at half-time.
The second half proved to be a dour struggle with no goals scored.
Midfielder Luci Williams used her pace on several occasions to carry the ball forward, but the opposition stood firm.
Once again the young Bulls were competitive.
Again coach Paul Kramer used interchange to give all players equal time on field and the chance to play a variety of positions.
Goal: Michael Kramer.
