Tough battle for Pakenham Warriors

IT was a tough round 10 for Pakenham Warriors Basketball Club with not many teams on the winners’ list.

Playing Melbourne Uni the Warriors started well leading 17-10 at quarter time.

In the second term the Warriors couldn’t make a shot and the Uni team who took full control to lead 27-21 at half time.

The Warriors got back into the game in the third but Uni still lead 42-34 at three-quarter time.

In the last term the Warriors edged back the lead to two points but Uni was able to hang on and win 56-51.

Centre Jamie Stow (10 points) was strong inside while guard Adam Connelly (11 points) was lively and big man Tim Hendrikx (15 points) fought hard at the basket.

The Warrior women played Waverley (1) at home and led 10 points to 7.

In the second quarter the Warriors got their running game going and went in at half-time on 23 points each.

The third quarter saw the Warriors start to dominate through Jodie Bird and Courtney Duff to lead 38 to 33, and with Waverley’s playmaker on four fouls were able to run away winners 54 to 40 with all players getting on to the scoreboard - Laura Craven 3, Judy Davey 5, Gemma Craven 6, Natalie Sallai 9 and Jodie Bird top scoring with 18 points and under-18 guard Courtney Duff 8 points.

Whittlesea came out hard as expected jumping to an early lead.

Pakenham concentrated on applying tight defensive pressure, helping it get back in the game.

Cheyne Pettit nailed 15 points in the first half. A three pointer to Reece Ainsworth and singles to Stuart Coleman, James Bridgett and Tim Hendrikx saw Pakenham go in at half time down 24-34.

The second half saw Pakenham continue its focus on tight defence, led by some strong rebounding efforts by John Potter, Stuart Coleman and Tim Hendrikx.

Cheyne Pettit was dangerous around the basket, scoring another 13 points giving him 28 points for the game. Tim Hendrikx fired up with 10 points in the half.

John Potter worked hard for seven points and Stuart Coleman’s two finished off a very competitive second half where Pakenham matched it with the highly fancied Whittlesea side, going down 56-70.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 18 GIRLS

Doncaster who took an eight-point lead before Meaghan Cook put the first 5 points of the Warriors score.

In the second half the Warriors came out determined to take it up to Doncaster.

Katie Cornish scored valuable points at the foul line. Kelly Peers put in some nice shots in early in the second half. Meaghan Cook, April Hart, Cassie Bridgett and Courtney Duff worked hard for the team in defence.

It was a point-for-point battle in the last two minutes ending in a draw 38-38.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 18 BOYS

Playing Eltham the Warriors were sluggish as the Wildcats made the running despite Luke Fortune hitting a three pointer to lead 20-14 at half-time.

The Warriors fought back with Andrew Crew (4 points) and Nick Fromhold (5 points) working hard.

Steve Luxford (8 points) hit some clean shots, while guard Nathan Page (4 points) ran hard as did the athletic Justin Smaluch who top scored with 11 points for the Warriors who pressed hard in the final minutes but couldn’t bridge the gap, Eltham winning 38-36.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 16 GIRLS BLUE

Playing Warrandyte the home side skipped away to an early lead as the Warriors fought hard to stay in touch as Emma Blacka found the net and Rebecca Garrick and Jess Harris intercepted the ball well and rebounding as Warrandyte lead 26-8 at half time.

Tighter defence in the second half by the Warriors kept the home side in check, but it was too strong winning 44-16

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 16 GIRLS GOLD

The girls played Diamond Valley at home and from the onset it was a close tussle with each team working hard to score and the Eagles led 19-12 at half-time.

The second half saw a determined Warriors team put pressure on the Eagles.

The Warriors fought hard and were one point up trying to stop the Eagles from scoring, only to foul with seconds remaining.

The Eagle player went to the line and was successful with both to put them one point ahead for a win 25-24.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 16 BOYS

The Warriors hosted the ladder leaders the Nunawading Spectres and lost two of the starting five to injury and the Spectres went to a 11- 2 lead.

Jackson Fromhold and Brendan Gillen steadied the ship and James Dobson (16pts) and Daniel Jeavons (14pts) then turned the game, adding 20 points between them to see the Warriors trail 24/28 at half time.

The Warriors then fought back in the second half for an excellent win and now sit in top of the Metro 2 ladder.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 14 GIRLS

The Warriors played McKinnon that had only been defeated once this season.

McKinnon led at the half 18 points to 12.

In the second half the Warriors extended their defence and caused numerous turnovers and slowly started to peg the lead back before finally taking the lead with two minutes to play.

The Warriors continually sent McKinnon to the line where on the last two free throws were able to make both shots to win by one point.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:UNDER 14 BOYS

Pakenham Warriors started well with Ashley Beck (5) driving hard to the basket and drawing foul shots as the first half was an even affair.

Casey Wasslyko a new player scored his first point for the Warriors, with Matt Jeavons (2) and Adam Young (3) giving them a one point lead at half time 15-14.

In the second half Pakenham lifted with great defensive pressure causing turnovers as Mark Nicosia (7) and Thomas West (10) opened up a lead with Lewis Vigliarolo(6) and Sean Armstrong (11) scoring well the Warriors went on to score a great win 45 to Eltham 30.
