Daniel Jordan of Emerald was thrilled to be named the winner of an environmental award at his school.
FOR Daniel Jordan, thinking about frogs is more than a pastime -- it's a passion.
This Emerald boy’s love of frogs has won him an environmental achiever award.
Daniel was last week named winner of the inaugural Emerald Primary School environmental award.
The grade six student’s passion for frogs and the environment led to his nomination.
The inaugural Environmental Awards were made possible by former school council president Lee Fuller, who has offered to sponsor the awards for the next three years.
Over the last couple of months teachers have been nominating students for the environmental awards.
As the winner Daniel was given a book on animals and has already found his favourite page – the frog page.
Daniel’s passion for frogs started several years ago when he found a frog when walking along a boardwalk in Emerald.
He picked up the frog and has had a passion for them ever since.
Daniel loves researching frogs of all types but said the green tree frog and the white-lipped green tree frog are his favourites.
He also spends hours – day and night – caring for the school’s frogs, making sure they are fed properly.
Daniel was excited about winning the environmental award and said it was a great way to finish off his primary education.
Daniel said the difference between humans and frogs was what fascinated him the most.
“They are completely different to us – they eat differently and move different,” he said.
“They use their hands and tongues to catch flies, mosquito, spiders and moths - it’s just amazing to watch.”
Although Daniel will move on to secondary school at the end of the year he has vowed to return as often as he can to keep an eye on how the frog bog is going.
He has even made plans to return to the school in four years to do work experience.
“I want to come back next year and see how it is all going.”
Daniel even has a future as a frog expert all mapped out.
“I want to go and look at the frogs at Melbourne Zoo and hopefully one day be on the frog team at the zoo,” he said.
