IT WAS out with the old showerhead and in with the new in Pakenham last week.

A water-saving initiative saw people able to exchange old showerheads for a more efficient one - free of charge - as part of World Environment Day celebrations.

Cardinia Shire Council and South East Water clubbed together to offer the free showerhead exchange, held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

About 800 showerheads were exchanged during the exercise last Tuesday.

Cardinia environment and heritage manager Ian Stevenson said the council hoped to reduce water consumption across the municipality by 15 per cent over the next five years.

“This program is a first step at encouraging a reduction in water use,” he said.

Water efficient showerheads can reduce household water and energy bills by as much as $60 and save up to 20,000 litres per year.
