Left: Jeanette and Kevin Conyers with 13-year-old Kelly are still waiting for answers to questions surrounding 18-year-old Bryan’s death.
THE grieving parents of a murdered teenager whose half-burnt body was found with stab wounds in Pakenham are still asking: ‘Why’?
Kevin and Jeanette Conyers have had to endure a waking nightmare since son Bryan was discovered lying dead under a disused house in Abrehart Road.
The grisly find by a security guard two weeks ago sparked a homicide investigation with police still piecing together the mystery.
Homicide squad Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Gerard Clanchy said inquiries were continuing. He said it was believed the 18-year-old was killed elsewhere and his body dumped in Pakenham.
Family and friends farewelled Bryan at a funeral service on Monday.
But Mr Conyers said it would be a long time before people close to his son got over their loss.
“It’s not fair,” he said.
“Somebody took my son away and I want to know why.”
Bryan Conyers was last seen two days before his body was found in the garage of a house which has not been occupied for a year.
Police have said drugs may have been a factor in the teenager’s death but emphasised there were a number of avenues of inquiry.
Mr Conyers said he and his wife had no idea who could have killed their son.
Mr Conyers said Bryan had “gone off the rails” and mixed with the wrong crowd at times but had recently moved back to his parents’ Doveton home and appeared to be settling down.
“He was just a typical young bloke. He was a rebel in his way; anything he wanted out of life he took it by the horns and went for it.
“He was never scared to have a go. I was proud of him. He was a good kid.”
Det Act Sen Sgt Clanchy said police were still trying to establish a motive for the murder and identify where Bryan was killed.
“The investigation is ongoing. A number of his friends and associates have been interviewed and provided information to the investigators,” Det Act Sen Sgt Clanchy said.
Mr Conyers said police had been terrific in their support.
He acknowledged there was speculation about the circumstances leading to his son’s death, but maintained it was all only hearsay at this stage.
“You don’t know what to believe,” he said.
“He was a kid who had problems but he did well.”
Mr Conyers said the last words Bryan said to his mum were that he’d be home later and he loved her.
Despite hearing news reports that a young man’s body had been found in Pakenham, it was not until police delivered the phone call all parents dread that the awful reality hit home. “He was my only boy,” Mr Conyers said.
“It’s devastating.
“Some days you’re on top of it, other days you’re a blubbering mess.
“We’ll remember him the way it was, but I don’t think you ever get over it.”
