Doug ‘Titchie’ Brain, centre, put his best foot forward during the Anzac Day service in Melbourne.
DOUG Brain might just possess the longeststanding nickname in Cardinia Shire.
Affectionately known as ‘Titchie’ or ‘Basher Brain’, Doug, who turns 94 this month, confesses his memory of how he received his nickname is a little cloudy.
“It was back when I was 14,” he said.
Doing the math, it means Doug’s nickname was coined almost 80 years ago.
“I was working with the Andrews family, who were farmers in Pakenham for many years,” Titchie recalled.
“I am fairly short (168 centimetres) and I think that had something to do with it.”
Since then, Titchie has evolved into Basher Brain.
But whatever names Doug goes by, everyone knows he is an all round good bloke.
Defying his age, Doug marched along Swanston Street, Melbourne, on Anzac Day and then returned to the Bunyip RSL so he could attend the service with his mates.
Titch, who fought in the World War II 2/12th division, said he attended the Anzac Day services because he loved keeping the spirit of the day alive.
But how many more years of marching are left in Titchie’s legs?
“I’m not too sure about that,” he laughed.
“The legs are alright at the moment so I’ll keep going while I can.”
