A TEAM of police officers and firefighters who worked to save three teenagers from flood waters have been honoured more than a year after the dramatic rescue.

Senior Constable Andrew Macreadie said he and the rest of the crew were just doing their jobs the day they saved the teenagers from the raging Cardinia Creek after it had flooded in February last year.

“It's a really good feeling knowing that you're saving a life,” he said.

On Friday, Sen Const Macreadie was honoured at The Royal Humane Society of Australasia's bravery awards ceremony where he received a bronze medal.

Beaconsfield CFA volunteer James Cain, firefighter Marc Jensen and former Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade Captain Phil Craig received Certificates of Merit for their part in the rescue.

“It's really great to be recognized, I've never had one before,” Sen Const Macreadie said.

The teenagers had entered the creek and been caught in the raging water.

Sen Const Macreadie rescued two of the teens who were washed into a cyclone fence on land flooded by the creek.

Firefighter Marc Jansen worked with Sen Const Macreadie to free the remaining teenager who was holding onto a power pole in the middle of the creek.

CFA volunteer James Cain stayed in the water to look out for floating debris and help out the rescue effort.

Nar Nar Goon Captain Phil Craig said the brave rescue was a joint effort.

“Beaconsfield Fire Brig-ade also responded and assisted us to provide a safe environment for Andrew and Marc entering the water,” he said.

“It really was a joint effort and a good example of how that can result in a successful outcome.”

Victorian Governor Alex Chernov presented the awards at the Melbourne Town Hall and said that it was an extra special ceremony to honour the brave men and women who risked their lives during the Black Saturday bushfires and the Victorian floods.

“The awards honour the selfless acts of bravery by those who have risked their lives for others,” he said.
