THE recent floods proved that being someone's neighbour means more than just living next door.

Neighbours rallied together to clean up homes, gardens and driveways. Neighbours relied on each other and looked out for one another, lending support wherever they could.

There's no doubt, then, that these same people will be joining together to celebrate Neighbour Day on Sunday 27 March.

City of Casey mayor Shar Balmes said that getting to know your neighbours was one of the privileges and responsibilities of suburban life.

“Developing strong relationships with the people next door and across the street is an excellent way of strengthening our communities and creating safer, healthier and more vibrant places to live,” she said. The City of Casey is encouraging all residents to make a special effort to introduce themselves to older residents in their street and anyone who lives alone.

Get to Know Your Neighbour kits are available for Casey residents interested in participating.

They are available from Neighbourhood Houses and Community Learning Centres, as well as Casey Customer Service Centres. They include street party permit information, 'hello postcards' and brochures.
