JASON and Nikki will be racing to the altar this Saturday to be ‘finally Wright.’
Pakenham couple and racing fans Jason Wright and Nikki Colledge will have the honour of being the first couple to wed on track at the Pakenham Racecourse.
They will exchange vows under the finishing post between race one and two before celebrating with 40 guests in their trackside marquee, titled, you guessed it, ‘finally Wright.’
The theme is fitting considering their first date (and kiss) was at Oaks Day in Flemington eight years ago.
“We checked out a few different themes but we are members here and we liked the atmosphere,” Jason, a keen punter, said.
Nikki said having the wedding at the track, during Pakenham Racing Club’s inaugural Jockey’s Recognition Day, was a sure bet to get Jason down the aisle.
“We’ve been together eight years and I thought, this is the only way I will get him here,” she laughed.
Jason’s best man will be Nathan, the couple’s two-year-old son.
To complete the race day theme, the couple will cut a horseshoe cake. Other initial ideas, such as having the guests dress as jockeys and Nikki enter on a horse, were scrapped for logistic reasons.
“I wanted everyone in jockey silks but it wasn’t the most popular idea,” Jason said.
“But a few people are wearing fascinators, and a lot of people are wearing hats,” Nikki added.
Helping the couple’s dream come true is Pakenham Racing Club Racing co-ordinator Hayley Conn, who has become somewhat of a wedding co-ordinator over the past six months.
“Hayley’s like my matron of honour – she’s been there through thick and thin,” Nikki said.
The couple plan to place a few bets on the day, and will be keeping an eye on the form guide for any appropriately named nags.
“I’ll probably put a big quaddie on at the start of the day so I can spend time with the guests,” Jason said.
And of course, they are backing their marriage to go the distance.
“Love’s a gamble. We’ll see if we win in the end, who knows? But what better place to do it,” Nikki said.
