Make sure your pet has access to shade.KEEP your pets cool, that’s the word from the Cardinia Shire Council this summer.

Residents are encouraged to provide their pets with shade and plenty of accessible fresh water in a cool place.

Brooke Ranken, Senior Local Laws Officer, said animals and birds dehydrate quickly in heat conditions with potentially lethal effects on their general health.

“Pets are similar to people, they need looking after on extremely hot days and extra care,” she said.

“On hot days animals should never be left in cars or the back of utes, dogs are particularly vulnerable as they do not sweat.”

Residents living in fire danger areas are also reminded to make provisions for their pets in the event of a fire or emergency.

During an actual emergency event, Relief Centre needs are determined, including their location, by the Municipal Emergency Response Co-ordinator and will be activated accordingly.

Bushfire Preparedness Consultant, Tanya Winn said in the event of an emergency, if activated, people will be directed to a site at Lang Lang township.

This will be the only one available that is able to accommodate residents with pets if alternate plans have not been made.

“We understand the attachment people have for their pets, so it is important that they are included in emergency plans,” she said.

“The RSPCA has some great information available on their website on how to create emergency plans and kits for your pets.”
