SOME fascinating fossils are on display at Wilson Botanic Park.

Staff members and experts at the park have uncovered a number of fossilized trees throughout many years, including a tree fossil that is estimated to be 22 million years old.

One of the consequences of quarrying the Wilson Hill at Berwick, now Wilson Botanic Park, has been the discovery of fossilized trees. The fossils may be the remains of a eucalypt forest buried in a volcanic incident millions of years ago.

The 120 years of quarrying activity represents a significant part of the park’s history.

A group of volunteers, Friends of Wilson Botanic Park, are recording this history and seeking former employees of the quarry to help with information about the park.

The goal of the group is to provide further interpretation information for the park and to produce booklets and brochures on the history of the quarry for students, visitors and education tours.

The Friends of Wilson Botanic Park are keen to hear from anyone who used to work at the quarry, or has information about past quarrying activities.

Contact Lex Nieboer at the park on 9707 5818.
