A COUPLE’S vow to open a rural wedding haven has finally paid off after a two-and-a-half year battle.
Matthew and Alison Eno had their dream realised last month when the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) gave them the green light to run a wedding and reception centre at their Iona property.
The Enos had been previously knocked by civic leaders on two occasions. Councillors were concerned that the development was out of character for the area and would be detrimental to the amenity of nearby residents. Mr Eno said it was exciting that couples could soon be walking down the aisle at the chapel.
“It’s been a dream that we’ve had to set something like this up ever since we bought the property,” he said.
The wedding and reception centre will be held in a 100-year-old Presbyterian Church which is on the Eno’s Little Road property. Mr Eno said the restored chapel was the perfect setting for a country wedding with picturesque gardens, large pond and rotunda.
However, those wanting to tie the knot there will have to book fast. The restricted place of assembly only operates for a maximum of 30 days per year, from 10.30am and 6.00pm on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Neighbours had objected to the proposal, saying the noise from celebrations could upset cattle, cutting milk production, feeding and breeding.
VCAT overturned the council’s decision on the basis that the Eno’s proposal was entirely appropriate for its setting and that impacts on the surrounds of the site would be acceptable and kept in check by operating restrictions. All the Eno’s need now is for sewerage disposal approval before their first ceremony.
Mr Eno said the couple was beginning to take bookings and were looking forward to the arrival of their first big day.
