WHAT does it take to break into the music industry? “Persistence and belief in your ability to sing and write,” country singer/songwriter Bec Hance says.

The 25-year-old aspiring artist has been “feeling her way around” the music world for the past four years and it seems as though her hard work is finally beginning to pay off.

Bec Hance: Girls Like Me was released independently on Saturday 20 October and is available at the Lang Lang newsagency. The 12-track CD features original songs written by Bec who drew inspiration from her experiences growing up on a farm.

“They’re about Australian life, the land … laws politicians make and how we’ve changed as a country,” Bec said.

“It’s unique Australian country music.”

Ever since teaching herself guitar and strengthening her vocals with lessons Bec has been winning competitions, doing local pub gigs, performing at birthday parties and low key weddings.

It was during this time that a teacher from a Coburg singing school was impressed with the quality of Bec’s voice. After hearing some of her originals she encouraged Bec to try make something of her obvious talent.

“She heard me sing my originals … and told me I need to do something with it,” Bec said.

She was then advised to go see Chris Wilson, an Australian blues and rock legend who runs a studio in Clayton. He liked what he heard and the pair ended up working together over the next three years to produce Bec’s debut album which includes instrumental work by Chris Wilson.

Bec’s passion for the particular genre stems from being brought up on a farm with country tunes playing in the background.

“Saturday nights were music night. My father didn’t play country music himself, but he would always listen to it,” she explained.

Although the qualified paramedic admits it’s a hard industry to make it in, she remains optimistic.

“Any kind of work is hard to get in to … I might as well have a go while I’m still young,” she said.

“The main thing is getting accepted and respected.”

With her family and community support Bec will continue to succeed.

“She’s a really good singer and has worked hard to get somewhere. She hopes everyone enjoys her music just as much as her …” mother Martez said.
