Ian Miller and Phillip Taylor will be

The two cycling enthusiasts are participating in Ride to Work Day, an initiative by Bicycle Victoria to get people fitter.

Mr Miller will be riding about 70km from his home to his workplace at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery and back and Mr Taylor will be riding 60km from his home to his workplace at Telstra on Collins Street.

Mr Miller has always loved cycling and rides the full way to work every day.

“I love riding to work and I ride on weekends,” he said.

“I enjoy the freedom to go where you want and you don't get caught in traffic jams.

“It wakes you up in the mornings and you miss it if you don't do it – it's addictive.”

Mr Taylor started riding part of his trip to work eight years ago, cycling about five kilometres from his home to Pakenham station to park his bike and then taking the train to work.

“It's easier to find bike parking at the station and it takes about the same time for me to get to work anyway,” he said.

“Cycling keeps you fitter and saves on costs – I save 1000km a year on my car.”

The 60-year-old said cycling was something anyone could do as they get older and was a great way to keep exercising.

“It's something you can continue to do when you get older,” he said.

“You might slow down, but it's not as hard on your joints as running and jogging and it's a good way to remain fit.”

Both men encourage everyone to get involved and get active.

“Anyone who wants to should do it, it's easier than it looks,” Mr Miller said.

“Make it part of your lifestyle,” Mr Taylor said.

Ride to Work Day will be held on Wednesday 12 October.
